New Covid-19 variant strain: 'Show us the evidence'

New Covid-19 variant strain: '70% more contagious' claim questioned: 'Show us the evidence': Scientists call for clarity on claim that new Covid-19 variant strain is 70% more contagious

Boris Johnson was urged to publish clear evidence of coronavirus data last night Said new variant may be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than other strains

Professor Carl Heneghan expressed his scepticism over the 70 per cent figure

New coronavirus variant: What do we know?

The government's advisers on new infections now say they have "high" confidence that it is more able to transmit than other variants.

All the work is at an early stage, contains huge uncertainties and a long list of unanswered questions.

As I've written before, viruses mutate all the time and it's vital to keep a laser focus on whether the virus' behaviour is changing.

Is the mutant virus really out of control? Professor DAVID LIVERMORE argues the escalating mood of crisis is unwarranted: So far, more than 20,000 variants have been recognised, with most of the differences minor and inconsequential.

Mutant coronavirus in the United Kingdom sets off alarms, but its importance remains unclear

Long-term Covid-19 effects: The many strange symptoms, explained

Long-term Covid-19 effects: The many strange symptoms, explained: On December 3, the National Institutes of Health held a two-day seminar on what has come to be called long Covid, or long-haul Covid — cases of lingering symptoms that can last for weeks or months after an initial infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently created a list of some of the persistent symptoms patients are experiencing, which include chest pain, brain fog, fatigue, and hair loss — with patients reporting many others as well.

Because these patients don’t all have the same symptoms, they will need different kinds of post-Covid care. And the NIH made clear that there are still many more questions than answers — including whose symptoms might linger for months, and how to treat them.

Almost a year into the pandemic, there have not yet been thorough, large-scale studies to determine the true prevalence of long Covid. But preliminary research suggests that somewhere between 10 percent and 88 percent of Covid-19 patients will experience at least one symptom for many weeks or months.
