Europe's culture war on masks
Europe's culture war on masks: The mask wearing debate in the USA is dominated by ideology and political identity. A big slice of hard-core US anti-maskers are probably authoritarians. Politicians and media outlets with authoritarian agendas in Europe may be tempted to turn the mask debate into a culture war here.

Meet the 'Dark Tourists' Booking Trips to Wuhan
'I’d Like to See It for Myself' – Meet the 'Dark Tourists' Booking Trips to Wuhan: Wuhan, the former epicentre of COVID-19, is the latest destination for dark tourism trips. After the city’s 76-day lockdown ended in April, residents have attempted to return to some kind of normality, with recent GDP data now suggesting
that China may be the first major economy to recover from the pandemic.
And as the country’s economy improves, so does Wuhan’s tourism sector,
attracting visitors curious about the deadly virus’s initial focal
point.
Emergence and spread of a SARS-CoV-2 variant through Europe in the summer of 2020
Emergence and spread of a SARS-CoV-2 variant through Europe in the summer of 2020: A variant of SARS-CoV-2 emerged in early summer 2020, presumably in Spain, and has since spread to multiple European countries. The variant was first observed in Spain in June and has been at frequencies above 40% since July. Outside of Spain, the frequency of this variant has increased from very low values prior to 15th July to 40-70% in Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom in September. It is also prevalent in Norway, Latvia, the Netherlands, and France. Little can be said about other European countries because few recent sequences are available. Sequences in this cluster (20A.EU1) differ from ancestral sequences at 6 or more positions, including the mutation A222V in the spike protein and A220V in the nucleoprotein. We show that this variant was exported from Spain to other European countries multiple times and that much of the diversity of this cluster in Spain is observed across Europe. It is currently unclear whether this variant is spreading because of a transmission advantage of the virus or whether high incidence in Spain followed by dissemination through tourists is sufficient to explain the rapid rise in multiple countries.
How the coronavirus is spread through the air
Aerosol transmission of Covid-19: A room, a bar and a classroom: how the coronavirus is spread through the air: The coronavirus is spread through the air, especially in indoor spaces.
While it is not as infectious as measles, scientists now openly
acknowledge the role played by the transmission of aerosols – tiny
contagious particles exhaled by an infected person that remain suspended
in the air of an indoor environment. How does the transmission work?
And, more importantly, how can we stop it?
