COVID-19 :Determinants of Hospitalization, ICU and Death among 20,293 reported cases in Portugal: Older age stands out as the strongest risk factor for all outcomes specially for death as absolute is risk was small for those younger than 50. These findings have implications in terms of risk stratified public health measures that should prioritize protecting older people. Epidemiologic scenarios and clinical guidelines may consider the estimated risks, even though under-ascertainment of mild and asymptomatic cases should be considered in different age groups.
Covid-19: the ethics of clinical research in quarantine: Key messages
Quarantine is the confinement of people who have been exposed to a disease to prevent them from spreading it further
It has been used and will likely be used again to respond to covid-19
As a closed system, quarantine offers the possibility for highly controlled research into the development and transmission of covid-19
But quarantine is an infringement on individual rights, and thus raises ethical concerns and requires compelling justification to be used

Six deadly lockdown sins:
- Lockdowns will have a negative impact on mental health and lead to more suicides.
- With elective surgeries and routine screenings suspended, many diseases that would be treatable if caught in time will end up killing hundreds of thousands.
- People have been so terrorised by the propaganda unleashed by governments around the world that people requiring crucial care have refused to go to hospital, whether through fear of catching the virus, or because being good citizens they don’t want to trouble a badly over-burdened health system.
- The lockdowns reduced the amount of time people spent in the fresh air and sunshine, with some people being cooped up in high-risk environments like congested living complexes.
- Elderly hospital patients infected with COVID-19 were discharged into care and nursing homes to deadly effect, accounting for more than half of all Covid deaths.
- The deadliest impact of the lockdowns will be on the world’s poorest billion people over the next decade along multiple sub-pathways.

COVID-19 spurs media and entertainment companies to transform: The media and entertainment (M&E) industry, which has provided us all with so much comfort during this time of sheltering in place, will never be the same again. The Coronavirus (Safeguards) Bill 2020: Proposed protections for digital interventions and in relation to immunity certificates: This Bill attempts to provide safeguards in relation to the symptom tracking and contact tracing apps that are currently being rolled out in the UK; and anticipates minimum safeguards that will be needed if we move on to a roll out of “immunity certificates” (commonly known as passports) in the near future.
Time out for torts: The time is ripe for immunity for COVID-19: On May 11, attorneys general from 21 states wrote to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s chair and ranking member, requesting federal liability protection to help mitigate the threat of frivolous litigation related to COVID-19. I am a defender of Common Law state tort liability, but I firmly agree with the attorneys general that immunity is needed. They can provide it themselves, though. Here’s why.

COVID-19: in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton | Thorax: The majority of COVID-19-positive patients were asymptomatic (81%, 104 patients). We conclude that the prevalence of COVID-19 on affected cruise ships is likely to be significantly underestimated, and strategies are needed to assess and monitor all passengers to prevent community transmission after disembarkation.

Where The Latest COVID-19 Models Think We're Headed — And Why They Disagree: Models predicting the potential spread of the COVID-19 pandemic have become a fixture of American life. Yet each model tells a different story about the devastation to come, making it hard to know which one is “right.” But COVID-19 models aren’t made to be unquestioned oracles. They’re not trying to tell us one precise future, but rather the range of possibilities given the facts on the ground.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in primary municipal sewage sludge as a leading indicator of COVID-19 outbreak dynamics: We report a time course of SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in primary sewage sludge during the Spring COVID-19 outbreak in a northeastern U.S. metropolitan area. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in all environmental samples and, when adjusted for the time lag, the virus RNA concentrations were highly correlated with the COVID-19 epidemiological curve (R2=0.99) and local hospital admissions (R2=0.99). SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations were a seven-day leading indicator ahead of compiled COVID-19 testing data and led local hospital admissions data by three days. Decisions to implement or relax public health measures and restrictions require timely information on outbreak dynamics in a community.

Society will not be the same after lockdowns are lifted: The Economist coined the term “90% economy” to describe what will happen as lockdowns are eased across the world. Under strict lockdowns, economies tend to operate at about 60% capacity, analysis from Goldman Sachs suggests. But as they are eased, that figure rises to 90%. Many offices and factories reopen—but not all do, and people, scared of being infected, are likely to shun many social activities.

The pandemic has changed how we think about the privilege of mobility: Governments around the world have advised people to self-isolate, but who is able to follow this advice? In the United States, it is largely the richest 25 percent who can work from home. As the New York Times observed weeks ago, the middle class’ swift shift to virtual life has been striking. White-collar workers at large companies are likely to be some of the last to return to the office, if they do so at all. They may even be thriving at home, finding previously elusive downtime and investing in new hobbies.

A Former Labor Secretary’s Message to Essential Workers: When This Ends, “Threaten to Strike”: Essential workers have been heralded as “heroes” during the pandemic, cheered on by applause and music every night in some cities. While the symbolic appreciation is nice, the realities on the ground have been less so. The people who make our health care and food supply systems run, deliver packages and meals, and sanitize public spaces have been hit especially hard by the virus. And so far, these workers haven’t gotten much by way of increased pay and benefits. Congress expanded paid sick and family leave to workers through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act in March, but loopholes in the law left as many as 75 percent of workers without coverage.

And even as nations were exhorted to “test, test, test,” Japan has tested just 0.2% of its population -- one of the lowest rates among developed countries.

Hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine with or without a macrolide for treatment of COVID-19: a multinational registry analysis: In summary, this multinational, observational, real-world study of patients with COVID-19 requiring hospitalisation found that the use of a regimen con-taining hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine (with or without a macrolide) was associated with no evidence of benefit, but instead was associated with an increase in the risk of ventricular arrhythmias and a greater hazard for in-hospital death with COVID-19. These findings suggest that these drug regimens should not be used outside of clinical trials and urgent confirmation from randomised clinical trials is needed.
Lockdowns and Human Rights: A British Perspective: Human rights do not cease to exist during a crisis. Indeed it is on these occasions they become most important. The government had the right to act as it did based on the information available to it when the virus arrived in Britain. Since then the situation has changed, and the government’s policy must change accordingly. Every hour British citizens’ rights are curtailed is another affront to a proud tradition of balancing rights and protecting distinctly British values.
Do Lockdowns Work? Mounting Evidence Says No: The coerced economic "shutdowns" - enforced with fines, arrests, and revoked business licenses—are not the natural outgrowth of a pandemic. They are the result of policy decisions taken by politicians who have suspended constitutional institutions and legal recognition of basic human rights. These politicians have instead imposed a new form of central planning based on an unproven, theoretical set of ideas about police-enforced "social distancing."

Lockdown Delays Cost at Least 36,000 Lives, Data Show: If the United States had begun imposing social distancing measures one week earlier than it did in March, about 36,000 fewer people would have died in the coronavirus outbreak, according to new estimates from Columbia University disease modelers.
